Castration by banding your baby goat Buckling

(Wethering your buckling)

Materials needed:

• Elastrator pliers
• Little green bands (lamb size)
• Iodine dispenser
• Small scissors (in case you have to remove the band)

Make sure buckling has had his CD/T shot.  Banding is best done at one month old.

Place band on elastrator, placing it about half way down the prongs.  Grip it firmly and with the prongs pointing up and your hand pointing down.  Grab the skin of the very bottom of the scrotum and with the your other hand pull this through the band (by means of the elastrato) up and over the testicles while expanding the band about as far as possible.  When the band is near abdomen and above testicles.  You may have to lower testicles below it by forcing them out of abdomen with your hand.  If you cannot get testicles below the band, withdraw the elastrator and try again.

Once the testicles are safely below the band, squeeze off the upper sack above the band with your free hand so they will not slip back up in.  With the elastrator position the band so it is tight against the top of his testicles.  When the band is in the position you want it, you must release the handles of elastrator and pull the band off the prongs with your free hand.  Apply iodine at the site.

Check the wound every two to three days and put iodine on it to prevent infection.  The sack will start to shrink and dry up in a few days and eventually fall off.
